4. The Driver Safety Development Program Delivering a considered response to an extraordinary problem

Look at it this way
If 5 full Jumbo Jets were to fall from the sky, or an event of the shocking magnitude of 9/11 was to happen every month, we can be pretty sure that this would be seen as an extraordinary turn of events.
The events described above are similar in terms of loss of life to the monthly death toll on the roads of the Russian federation.
For every life lost there can be assumed to be a plethora of` vehicle related injuries, and hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of accident related damage and disruption.
Let's further take into account the disruption to traffic flows, strains on the health and emergency services, consequential costs to business and the economy, and we see that there is not only a grim toll in terms of human suffering, but an economic problem of major significance, and the leading cause of occupational fatality.
Business Impacts
You may already have an understanding of the issue as it relates to your organization, otherwise a visit to the car fleet department and a browse through the accident and damage statistics and costs, may convince you that apart from being a societal and governmental issue, there are real imperatives for business to work to bring this problem under control, in both human and financial terms (one of our contacts reports $1.900 average cost per accident per vehicle)

What can be done?
Most vehicle accidents have a causation that can be attributed to human error, by reducing the number of errors that we make whilst driving and anticipating and making provision for the errors of others, we reduce significantly our risk of being involved in an accident.
By further motivating and assisting our car fleet users to recognize their capabilities and improve the skill and safety of their driving, we enable individuals to make the best use of road and traffic conditions, reduce fleet costs, increase asset utilization and decrease fuel consumption.

The Driver Safety Development Program (DSDP)
This program has been specifically developed to take into full account the culture, conditions and realities of the driver in Russia, and the particular environment of operation. During the development of the program it quickly became apparent that before more advanced driver training could be delivered successfully, it would be necessary to address the cultural and behavioral aspects of safety on the roads in a thorough, convincing, and innovative way in order to stimulate a constructive self appraisal of what constitutes driving skill and professionalism among the driver community.
The DSPD is divided into 3 distinct but interrelated segments:
- Behavior and Safety influences (4 hours)
Through the use of high quality locally produced video material. Innovative case studies and workshops backed up by highly interactive presentation material, drivers are encouraged to evaluate, how culture and behavior influence the choices that make the difference between skilful and other drivers. Participants are faced with a self examination of the potential consequences and causes of accidents and challenged to recognize and eliminate the potential for human error related accidents.
- Elements of Road Craft (4 hours)
Participants are introduced to the tools that applied on the road will continually improve their driving skills, driving skill and driving safety are aspects of the same ability, the ability to control the position and speed of the vehicle relative to everything else on, and in proximity to the road.
- Practical application on the road (7 hours)
Participants working in groups of 4 with an instructor are mentored by the instructor in application of the techniques in everyday driving situations, using group feedback, discussion, and commentary techniques participants are encouraged to evaluate responses to traffic and road conditions by themselves and by observing other participants in a constructive way.
All instructors have undertaken professional development in the delivery of training of road-craft techniques, by UK certified organizations.
The behavioral safety elements were developed by company professionals working in this field, and are unique to this particular course.
Other Information
This is a driver development program and assumes candidates have passed the statutory driving test and have some practical driving experience.
Optimal program size is 8 delegates over 2 days or 16 delegates over 3 days.
